The Thornton Parks Department strives to plan and implement sustainable practices, such as the following:
- The use of appropriate plant materials
- Using soil amendments to help ensure healthy plant growth
- Adding mulch to help reduce water demand and weed growth
- Planting native seeds when possible
- Using Texas Bluegrass, which is less water demanding than Kentucky Bluegrass
- Using the "Dark Sky Standard" for all lighting systems in parks and trails
- Implementing white rooves on City recreational facilities
