THORNTON INITIATIVES

"The only way forward, if we are going to improve the quality of the environment, is to get everybody involved." -Richard Rogers

ELECTRICITY DEMAND REDUCTION

The city of Thornton is served by two electricity providers - Xcel Energy and United Power. In the Xcel Energy part of the city, all new street lights that are installed are LED, which saves the city a considerable amount of money in reduced energy consumption than the older, high pressure sodium streetlights.

In the portion of the city served by United Power, all new streetlights that are installed are LED as well. In addition, the city is examining a possible program to retrofit existing streetlights with LED bulbs.

Over time, these improvements are estimated to reduce the city's energy demand associated with keeping our streets safely lit by approximately 40-50%.
