The Thornton Parks Department strives to plan and implement sustainable practices, such as the following:

  1. The use of appropriate plant materials
  2. Using soil amendments to help ensure healthy plant growth
  3. Adding mulch to help reduce water demand and weed growth
  4. Planting native seeds when possible
  5. Using Texas Bluegrass, which is less water demanding than Kentucky Bluegrass
  6. Using the "Dark Sky Standard" for all lighting systems in parks and trails
  7. Implementing white rooves on City recreational facilities
